Grant Guidelines

MAVA has developed guidelines for its grantmaking activity. These guidelines are designed to provide clarity for those seeking grants, in terms of size, timing and organizational designation.

All grant submissions must be sponsored by a MAVA member or associate member.

Who's Qualified

MAVA will make grants to non-profit, charitable organizations whose missions are complementary to MAVA's mission, and its primary funding areas are related to entrepreneurship and education.

  • A portion of funds available will be designated for social services organizations, particularly if the grant will be applied to an educational or entrepreneurial activity.
  • MAVA may also make grants in response to other critical needs or events.
  • Grants will be made across the geographic region that MAVA serves (DC, Maryland, Virginia).
  • Grants will be made for a single year only; multi-year commitments will be avoided.
  • MAVA expects to make multiple grants with an average size of $10,000.
  • Grants will be made to local organizations, rather than large, national institutions, where the size of the contribution will have the most significant impact.

Who is Not Eligible

MAVA does not provide funding for the following:

  • Individuals.
  • Organizations not considered non-profit by the IRS.
  • Religious organizations.
  • Political causes, candidates, organizations or campaigns.
  • Organizations which discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, national or ethnic origin.
  • Organizations whose primary purpose is to influence legislation.
  • Endowments or capital campaigns.
  • Sponsorships.
  • Association memberships.
