Startups to watch in 2013, according to D.C.'s venture elite at Columbia Capital, Grotech Ventures, New Atlantic Ventures, New Enterprise Associates

12/19/2012

Ask any venture capitalist about up-and-coming startups, and they'll inevitably slip in at least one portfolio company. Some might only mention their portfolio. This is to be expected.

But that doesn't make the answers any less interesting. At Potomac Tech Wire's Venture Capital Outlook 2013, a cross-cut of the region's venture elite was asked which tech players we should we watching out for in 2013. Here are their answers:

Arun Gupta, partner, Columbia Capital: NextNav, the McLean- and Sunnyvale, Calif.-based satellite venture headed by former Sirius XM Radio Chairman Gary Parsons. Nextnav raised $50 million this year from Columbia Capital. NextNav is solving the "X,Y,Z coordinate issue," said Gupta. "Not only knowing what block you're on, but what floor of the building you're on."

Don Rainey, general partner, Grotech Ventures: Invincea, a Fairfax-based cybersecurity startup, and HelloWallet. Both are Grotech portfolio companies.

Thanasis Delistathis, managing partner, New Atlantic Ventures: Spotflux, a data-security startup that began in D.C. but is now based in Brooklyn. Nav Fund is an investor. Also: Uber.

Harry Weller, general partner, New Enterprise Associates: Database tech startup FoundationDB, based in Vienna. CloudFlare, based in San Francisco.
