SocialToaster gets 50k signups in 24 hours with Shakira and UNICEF for child health campaign


A new UNICEF campaign is seeking donations for items like polio vaccines, rehydration salts and therapeutic food to ship to families (and their babies) across the world, and it’s enlisting the help of sincere-hips endorser Shakira and her boyfriend, Gerard Piqué, center-back for FC Barcelona.

Oh, and Woodberry-based startup SocialToaster is in on the action.

Through “Shakira and Gerard Piqué’s World Baby Shower,” participants donate the money to purchase the items UNICEF needs. Using SocialToaster, donors spread the word about their donations and the campaign through their social networks. As donors share more on Facebook and Twitter, for example, they’ll earn points that can be put toward winning signed Shakira CDs and DVDs and FC Barcelona shirts and foot — uh, soccer balls.

SocialToaster, the social media startup that recruits fans of businesses, publications, services and causes as “ambassadors” for sharing content online in order to increase website traffic and awareness, launched the campaign with Shakira and UNICEF Jan. 17.
“We signed up 50,000 users in about 24 hours, trended globally on Twitter, and were mentioned on the TODAY show, E!, and several other news outlets,” wrote founder Brian Razzaque in a post on the Baltimore Tech Facebook group.
