MAVA Leadership Member Core Capital's Tom Wheeler Confirmed as FCC Chairman

The Senate has unanimously confirmed Tom Wheeler as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), nearly six months after President Obamanominated the managing director of DC-based investment firm Core Capital Partners for the role. Wheeler succeeds Julius Genachowski, who in March announced his plans to step down. Wheeler joined Core in 2005 after previously co-founding SmartBrief, an online targeted news service. He also has served as president of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA), and has been an informal advisor to Obama on telecom policy issues. "Tom Wheeler will be a strong advocate for consumers and the public interest at a time when the FCC is facing decisions that will shape the future of our nation's telephone network and the wireless, broadband and video industries," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee
